ATTAINGNANT: the 14 books of MOTETS

1534, 1535, 1539

Edited by A. Smijers and A. Tillman Merritt

Of the great anthology of Pierre Attaingnant, only three complete sets of part books are known today. The collection contains works from over 260 composers; many of the pieces were likely composed in the first twenty years of the reign of François I. The beautifully engraved Oiseau-Lyre edition, begun in 1934 and finished in 1964, is being made once again available as a complete unnumbered set. Volumes 1 to 3, long out of print, are available as carefully scanned PDF files of the orginal volumes, ready for binding by individual libraries or collectors to their own specifications; volumes 4 to 14 are on the original Oiseau-Lyre paper and are hard-bound. The set of 14 volumes (about 2800 pages) is being offered while supplies last at the special price of 1260 EUR. In addition, some of the volumes are available individually at 90 EUR.

"The Attaingnant motets are indispensable to the construction of the whole story of polyphonic music between Obrecht and Josquin des Prés in the first years of the sixteenth century and Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso at the end of it." - Ernest Newman, 1936
